We hope you enjoy your time away!

THE PSAT TEST WHEN WE RETURN FROM FALL BREAK

The PSAT otherwise known as the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test will be administered at Springwood School to students in grades 8-11 on Wednesday, October 16.

This is part of an academic competition conducted by the NMSC for the route of entry to the National Merit Scholarship Program.  Awards that are offered are explained on the following website:

www.nationalmerit.org

The mission of the College Board is to connect students to college success and opportunity by preparing millions of students annually for a successful transition to college.  You may learn more about their programs at collegeboard.org

The Springwood School administration of the PSAT will be in the FAC beginning at 8 am on Wednesday, October 16th.  All students will be required to have standard No. 2 pencils with erasers to complete the test (NO MECHANICAL PENCILS).

Students are asked to have a scientific or graphing calculator with them to use on the math portion of the test.  The list of acceptable calculators that students may use has been inserted below.

The entire administration of the PSAT with instructions will take approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes.  The actual test itself is 2 hours and 45 minutes long with two 10 minute breaks built in.

All students in grades 8-11 are asked to be seated in the FAC no later than 7:50 a.m. on Wednesday morning, October 16th (Note – this is the day we return from fall break.)

A copy of the 2019 PSAT/NMSQT Student Guide will be distributed to students in grades 9-11 by Friday, to utilize the practice tests and test taking tips for extra preparation for next week’s test.  For those students who wish to utilize some additional practice time before the test, they can access the Khan Academy website for free, personalized, online SAT practice.

Please plan accordingly for our PSAT administration planned for next week.  We will encourage our students in grades 8-11 whom will be testing to plan to get a good night’s rest, eat a healthy breakfast and to arrive at school early to be seated in the FAC by 7:50 a.m. that day.

I hope you all enjoy a relaxing and restful fall break and we look forward to our student’s doing well on the PSAT administration on October 16th.

Bring One of These Calculators

Graphing calculator (most models permitted; see Official Student Guide for list)

Scientific calculator

Four-function calculator (not recommended)

Leave These Devices at Home:

Anything that can connect to the Internet

Anything that makes noise or “talks”

Calculators that use electrical outlets

Calculators with QWERTY keypads

Tablets or cellphones

Laptops or handheld computers

Paper-tape calculators

Calculators with a pen-input device or stylus

Calculator Smarts

Bring your own calculator. You can’t share one.

Don’t bring a brand-new calculator. Bring one you know.

Practice for the test using the same calculator you’ll use on test day.

Decide how to solve a problem, then decide if you need your calculator. This might surprise you, but calculators don’t always save time. In fact, the Math Test includes some questions where it’s faster not to use a calculator, even though you’re allowed to.

FALL FESTIVAL…MARK YOUR CALENDARS

We are excited for the 2019 Fall Festival…..a long-standing event at Springwood School that is sponsored by the Junior class and parents to help raise funding for the Junior/Senior Prom. This year the Fall Festival will be held on Saturday evening, October 26 from 4:30pm-7:30pm. The Fall Festival will be held in the Fine Arts Center as well as other outside activities. Games, silent auction, cakewalk, fun and food are all included in this great family event. We encourage and invite all families to attend and support the junior class as they raise these funds while providing safe entertainment for all participants.  The Fall Festival is open to the public, so invite your neighbors and friends!
